About Us

Since our founding in 2022, we have hosted our 3rd annual chess casual event, reaching 500+ high school students across the York region. At YRChess, we are committed to fostering newfound interest in chess through accessible events open to all skill levels. Through these events, we have helped introduce over-the-board chess to various students in the region. We strive to be a transparent and inclusive organization that provides an open and welcoming platform for beginners and experts alike to bond through the game of chess. 

Although online chess is easily accessible to most people, access to over-the-board chess is almost limited to competitive tournaments and other paid chess events. Yet, it is also one of the most valuable experiences that a new player can have, as there are many great differences between playing chess over a screen as opposed to a physical board. Therefore, providing this experience in a more accessible way has become our mission.
